Art Above a King Bed: Size and Height

The right size art for a king bed, single or in a group, and exactly how high to hang it.

Last updated: 23 October 2026

Quick answer: Choose art about 51–57 in (129–145 cm) wide, two-thirds to three-quarters of the 76 in mattress, and hang it with the bottom edge 6–10 in (15–25 cm) above the headboard. No standard single size lands in that range (48×36 in is a little small, 60×40 in a little large), so two 24×36 in frames side by side, or three 16×20 in, fit best.

What Size Art Goes Above a King Bed?

Art above a king bed should be about two-thirds to three-quarters of the mattress's width: 51–57 in (129–145 cm) for a 76 in mattress. Here's how common landscape sizes measure up:

California king (72 in / 183 cm): art 48–54 in (122–137 cm) wide, the same as an Australian king.

Kings vary more than queens: a US king is 76 in wide, a California king 72 in, and an Australian king 183 cm (72 in). Measure your mattress and use the matching numbers.

Metric sizes

For an Australian king (183 cm wide), aim for 122–137 cm:

Two or Three Pictures Above a King Bed

A pair or a set of three counts as one piece: measure across all the frames and the gaps between them. Use 2–3 in (5–8 cm) gaps and portrait frames.

How High to Hang Art Above a King Bed

Leave 6–10 in (15–25 cm) between the headboard and the bottom of the art. This table uses an 8 in gap and a 48×36 in frame whose wire pulls up to 3 in below the top:

A 48×36 in piece 8 in above the headboard: the nail goes at 91 in. The shaded strips show where the art’s side edges should land for the ideal width.

Leave at least 6 in (15 cm) between the top of the art and the ceiling. On an 8 ft (96 in) ceiling with a tall headboard or couch back, choose a shorter, wider piece or a row of smaller frames.

No headboard? Measure from the top of the pillows propped up the way you sit against them, and leave 8–10 in above that. Center the art on the bed, not the wall.

Worked Example

  • A king bed (76 in wide), with the headboard 50 in from the floor
  • Art: 48×36 in landscape (63% of the width, the closest standard size), wire 3 in below the top
  • Bottom of the art: 50 + 8 in gap = 58 in
  • Nail height: 58 + 36 − 3 = 91 in (231 cm), on the bed's center line

Over a bed, hang heavy frames from two hooks into studs or rated anchors, and choose acrylic over glass. More in the safety tips.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size art goes over a king bed?

About 51–57 in (129–145 cm) wide. No standard single size lands in it, so a pair of 24×36 in frames (51 in with the gap) or three 16×20 in frames (52 in) fit best; of single pieces, 48×36 in is the closest.

How high should art be above a king bed?

Leave 6–10 in (15–25 cm) between the headboard and the bottom of the art. With the headboard at 50 in, the bottom of the art goes at about 58 in.

Can art be wider than the bed?

It shouldn't be. Art wider than the bed looks top-heavy; keep it, or the whole group, within about three-quarters of the width, 57 in here.

Should art be centered on the wall or the bed?

On the bed. If it's off-center on the wall, center the art on it anyway, so the two read as one.
